The 2012 Discover DuckTM Recipe Contest for Professional Chefs
& Culinary Students Official Contest Rules and Prizes

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED OR SUBMITTED ONLINE NO LATER THAN JUNE 8, 2012.

Contest Rules:


To enter, you must be one of the following:
Chef Category: Professional chef, sous chef or lead line cook in a restaurant or a non-commercial
foodservice establishment
Student Category: Student at a professional culinary school with proof of current enrollment required

Contest open only to residents of the 50 United States and Washington, D.C., 18 years old or older.
  1. Each recipe entered must be for a small plate or appetizer. We are looking for enticing shareable dishes that start OR are part of a larger dining experience that use duck in a unique and non-traditional way. Each recipe must be able to serve 2-4 people.
  2. Each recipe entered must include a Maple Leaf Farms White Pekin Duck product and a list of ingredients in order of use with step-by-step instructions for preparation and plating documented on the entry form.
  3. All recipes must be original and owned exclusively by the individual contestant. By submitting a recipe, contestant is representing the recipe as original and owned exclusively by contestant. Previously published recipes, such as those in magazines or cookbooks, will be disqualified. Entrants must own the rights to disclose the recipe name and all associated information.
  4. All entries submitted become the property of Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. Submission of a recipe in this contest gives the sponsor the right to publish or use the recipe (with rights to adapt) without compensation to the entrant and to use the entrant’s name and/or likeness for advertising and publicity purposes. Entries may not infringe third party rights. Entries will not be acknowledged or returned.
You may submit up to three recipes beginning March 1, 2012. Each recipe must be submitted separately via mail or online using our entry form. Go to www.mapleleaffarms.com/chefcontest/ to download an entry form to print. Only one prize will be awarded per contestant.

To enter online go to www.mapleleaffarms.com/chefcontest/ to complete the entry form and click “agree” to confirm agreement with these rules.

If entering by mail, each recipe must be submitted separately with: (1) signed copy of the contest rules, (2) completed entry form, (3) your personal contact information, and (4) documentation of student enrollment, if applicable (mail or email a scanned copy of documentation).

Judging Process:
  1. All recipes will be judged “blindly” to ensure objectivity.
  2. A culinary professional will select the top 20 recipes from the chef category and the student category based on the following criteria:
    Accurate/Workable (30%) – All ingredients are listed in order of use with measurements and complete
    directions for preparation and plating
    Creative/Original (30%) – Use of duck in a non-traditional small plate (shareable) recipe
    Simple (40%) – Easily sourced ingredients and ease of preparation

  3. Using the criteria above, a second evaluation by a team of trained culinarians will evaluate the top 20 recipes in each group to determine the five finalists in the chef category and in the student category.
  4. The prize winners in each category will be chosen by Maple Leaf Farms CEO, Presidents, VP of Sales and Marketing and the Director of Sales based on: Taste (30%), Creative/Original (30%), Simple-easily sourced and prepared (40%).
Prize Winners:

Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. is not responsible for lost, misdirected or incomplete entries. Winners will be notified by mail on or before August 31, 2012. In addition, the winners will be announced at www.mapleleaffarms.com/chefcontest/ or by writing to the above address after August 31, 2012, and providing a self-addressed, stamped return envelope. Winners must complete and return his/her affidavit of eligibility within 10 days of receipt or Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. will select an alternate winner. Winners’ names will be used without compensation other than the prize money and used for promotional efforts by Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. The grand prize for the Chef Cateogry winner is $5,000, second place is $3,000 and third place is $1,500. The grand prize for the Student Category winner is $2,500 and second place is $1,500. The decision of the judging panel will be final.

Judging panel, employees, officers, directors, agents and representatives of Maple Leaf Farms, Inc., its affiliates, subsidiaries and agencies, and members of their immediate family (defined for these purposes as parents, children, siblings, step-parents, step-children, step-siblings, and their respective spouses) or persons living in the same household are not eligible to participate in the recipe contest. This contest is governed by Indiana law and void where prohibited by other applicable law.

By entering the recipe contest, each contestant is agreeing to the following, which will be reaffirmed by the winner’s affidavit of eligibility.

I understand that all entries are the property of Maple Leaf Farms Inc. and may be used by Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. for any purpose. Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. may change the name of my recipe. I also certify that this is an original recipe. I give Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. permission to use my name, my image and entry and recipe for publicity purposes. I represent to Maple Leaf Farms, Inc., that in submitting this recipe, the judging committee, their sponsoring organizations and their employees, are released from any claim or liability of any nature whatsoever arising out of selection, judging and awards process. I also understand that I am responsible for all taxes which result from my prize winnings and that I will be required to provide Maple Leaf Farms, Inc. with my social security number for purposes of tax reporting before I may claim my prize.
